Krav Maga Yashir Head Insttructor, Gershon Ben Keren is a Massachusetts based criminologist who has been working in the security industry since 1990 and practicing Krav Maga since 1994. He originally was an instructor with the IKMF (International Krav Maga Federation), under Eyal Yanilov and completed – and passed – the IKMF 29-day instructor course. He has trained with a wide variety of Israeli Krav Maga instructors including Mike Assulin, Avi Moyal, Amnon Darsa, and Haim Gidon, both in Israel and Europe. He has also trained with Dennis, Yaron and Guy Hanover, both privately and in public classes. He has taught Krav Maga classes and seminars internationally in Israel, Europe, Africa and Nort America. He has written three books on Krav Maga (Tuttle Publishing) and in 2010 was inducted into the Museum of Israeli Martial Arts in Herzliya, Israel. He currenyly holds a 5th Degree Black Belt in Krav Maga.
He has two master’s degrees both with distinction (Criminology/Criminal Psychology, and Psychology), and is an active member of both the APA (American Psychological Association) and the ASC (American Society of Criminology). He specializes in Environmental Criminology, which involves the study of how the built environment contributes to crime and violent offending i.e., where do such incidents occur and what is it about the environment that facilitates them etc. this involves using GIS (Geographical Information Systems) to map violent offending, and to identify geographic patterns that can help individuals understand where and when they are at the most risk of being victimized. Using this data/information coupled with an understanding of how various offenders set up and approach those they target it is possible to teach individuals how to predict, prevent and avoid violence. The Krav Maga Yashir program is researched and evidentially based. It trains individuals as to how to prevent and deal with violence as it happens in the real world, rather than simply trying to imagine what violence looks like from Youtube clips and the local news etc.
He has worked in a number of roles within the private security industry since 1990, from door security (working as head or part of a team providing security in pubs, bars, and clubs etc.) to close protection etc., and now provides security training to private security companies as well as law-enforcement and other agencies. He also provides consultancy services around security, risk management and mitigation to private companies and organizations.
